Grandma’s Chocolate Pie
Honest confession – this is one of my absolute favorite pies! The combination of the homemade crust, delicious chocolate filling and lightly sweet meringue is just perfect to my taste buds.
Ingredients
- 1 9 inch pie crust, baked and cooled
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 4 egg yokes (save the whites for meringue)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups milk
Meringue
- 4 egg whites
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cream of tartar
Instructions
- Blend together dry ingredients in medium pot with whisk
- Add egg yokes and milk
- Stir constantly over medium heat until mixture begins to thicken and bubble
- Once thickened to pudding-like consistency, remove from heat and add vanilla and butter & stir until butter is melted and fully incorporated
- Pour this into fully baked pie crust
- Top with meringue (as instructed below) and bake at 350 for 6-10 minutes or until lightly brown
- Let cool for 1 hour before slicing
Meringue
- Mix egg whites with sugar and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form
- Bake at 350 for 6-10 minutes or until lightly brown
