Grandma’s Chocolate Pie

Honest confession – this is one of my absolute favorite pies! The combination of the homemade crust, delicious chocolate filling and lightly sweet meringue is just perfect to my taste buds.

Cook Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 9 inch pie crust, baked and cooled
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 4 egg yokes (save the whites for meringue)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups milk

Meringue

  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar

Instructions

  • Blend together dry ingredients in medium pot with whisk
  • Add egg yokes and milk
  • Stir constantly over medium heat until mixture begins to thicken and bubble
  • Once thickened to pudding-like consistency, remove from heat and add vanilla and butter & stir until butter is melted and fully incorporated
  • Pour this into fully baked pie crust
  • Top with meringue (as instructed below) and bake at 350 for 6-10 minutes or until lightly brown
  • Let cool for 1 hour before slicing

Meringue

  • Mix egg whites with sugar and cream of tartar until stiff peaks form
  • Bake at 350 for 6-10 minutes or until lightly brown
